Photo Tips - Aperture

I have decided try something new for some of my posts. I always read a lot of photography books and am trying to learn as much as I can and develop my abilities as a photographer. So what I thought I might do is share that all with you. I plan on posting with examples what I am trying to learn more about at the time and maybe it will help someone else who is interested as much as it will benefit myself to explain and shoot it.
Today I am going to start out with something pretty basic. The aperture is one of three of your cameras main controls. It controls how much light comes in through the lens and the images depth of field. (how much is in focus). When I want a certain effect from using a certain aperture I usually will set my camera onto Aperture Priority. This allows me control of any of the creative settings I want while automating the shutter speed to expose the picture correctly.
With a larger aperture (which is actually the smaller numbers) your image will only focus on a small portion of the picture and throw everything else out of focus. With a small aperture (the bigger numbers) it will tend to make the whole picture in focus. I should also mention that how close your camera is to the subject or your zoom can also effect this.

This picture was shot at a very large aperture, 4 I believe, And I was very close to the subject causing the blurring effect. There are some blondies that Melissa made.

This is an example of a smaller aperture of 22 where the whole scene is in focus.

Now here is what I am really trying to work on right now. Varied levels of focus at different depths of the image and the focus plain being somewhere in the mid range and not just in front. When I first started playing with this I shot a lot of things like the blondies above with the subject front and center with the background blurring out. This is still a good effect in many instances. I am trying to work on putting my subject somewhere in the mid range and blurring out the foreground as well and the back ground. Here are two examples below.

Shot at Weeping Rock in Zions. I though it was cool the flowers were growing out of the wall.

Zoo Trip

There is a photo category at the Utah State Fair that I always make fun of called the wild life in captivity category. But today I am eating my own words a little bit because I am onsidering entering an image I shot while at Hogle Zoo on Friday. I picture I took is of two bears fighting. I don't think I have ever seen the bears do anything other that sit there if not hiding somewhere so you can't see them.
Melissa and I had a fun time at the zoo. We both were able to have fun taking pictures and just seeing the animals. Here are some of the better shots of the day. Also included camera control settings in case anyone is interested in those.
Let me know if you think the first one of the bears in contest worthy.

1st ever Night Photography

How is everyone liking the fog? I for one think it is really great and am fascinated with the perfect conditions that gave us such a thick early morning fog. It is not often that we get conditions quite like this so Melissa and I decided to go to Wheeler Farm so I could try out some night photography. This was my first real attempt at night photography and I think it went pretty well. The fog seemed to provide a very ambient light and really lit up my pictures. But we did have a good time. It's fun to go shoot some pictures in different conditions just to see what effects it will have. Here are some of the best of the night- nothing too spectacular but they were fun to shoot.

I don't know why this weird statue thing is at a farm but it made for my best shot of the night.

This pathway always seems to make for a good shot.

Melissa suggested this shot. She thought the winding fence was neat.

New Years Resolution

Hey everyone,
It has been awhile and I've gotten a little bit busy during the holiday (and finals) but I am back and would like to share one of my new years resolutions to you. The resolution is to blog once a week or more importantly to get out and use my camera at least once a week so I have something to blog about. Yes despite all the work and things to get in order in all my other resolutions this year I need to make time for myself to pursue and become better at my hobby. I need the time to unwind so that I can accomplish more during the other times. I think it is important for all of us to make sure we take a bit of time out to enjoy something we love.

I thought I would share a couple of pictures I took on New Years Eve while we we out doing some fireworks. Nothing fancy just me playing around with some extended shutter speeds while hand holding my camera. I thought that turned out kind of cool though. Happy New Year everyone and remember to set aside some time for yourself to pursue a hobby or learn something new this year.
